Underdogs Practice - Trauma vs Traumatic Events

As we continue to unpack the complex and multifaceted phenomenon of trauma, it’s important to distinguish the difference between the experience of a traumatic event and the development of lasting trauma. A traumatic event, something that happens in the outside world (like a natural disaster, an accident, or violence) is something that threatens one’s safety or well-being. But trauma is what happens inside of them as a result of that event. While not everyone develops long-lasting trauma, it's most commonly the emotional, psychological, and even physical response that can stick with someone long after the event is over. This practice aims to shed light on the nuanced differences between trauma and traumatic events, and explores ways to navigate the thin line that separates them. We take an extensive look at how our capacity to cope, our agency within the situation, our support systems, and our biology play a role in how we process difficult experiences. We dive into how trauma affects the brain, and most importantly, what we can do to heal and build resilience, offering some real-life examples, ways to implement coping strategies, and build out our support teams for navigating these challenges.
