Underdogs Practice - Building A Safe Place

"Building a Safe Place" is a guided visualization and mindfulness practice focused on creating an internal haven. Participants are instructed to close their eyes and begin by taking a few deep, calming breaths. They are then guided to imagine a place where they feel completely safe, secure, and at peace. This place can be real or imagined, and the emphasis is placed on engaging all five senses. Participants are encouraged to visualize the setting, noting the colors, shapes, and textures, to hear the sounds, to smell the scents, to feel the temperature, and even to imagine any tastes that might be present. The purpose is to create a vivid and detailed mental image of this safe place, allowing it to serve as a refuge during moments of stress or anxiety. By returning to this imagined sanctuary regularly, individuals cultivate a sense of inner calm and resilience, strengthening their ability to manage difficult emotions and find peace within themselves.

Homework

Over the next week, your homework is to deepen your connection with your 'Safe Place.' As we discussed, this is a guided visualization and mindfulness practice where you create an internal haven.

Your task is to spend 10-15 minutes each day, if possible, fully engaging with your Safe Place. Each time, try to describe it in as many details as possible, focusing on each of your five senses.

Specifically, for each session, please write down or mentally note:

  • Sight: What does your Safe Place look like? What colors, shapes, and textures do you see? What is the lighting like?

  • Sound: What sounds are present? Are they natural, like birdsong or waves, or man-made, like soft music? Is there silence?

  • Smell: What scents fill the air? Are they earthy, floral, or something else entirely?

  • Touch: How does the air feel against your skin? What textures do you feel beneath your feet or hands? Is it warm or cool?

  • Taste (if applicable): Are there any tastes present? If so, describe them.

The more vivid and detailed your descriptions, the stronger your connection to your Safe Place will become. This practice will help you build inner calm and resilience, allowing you to access this refuge whenever you need it.
